How to Apply for the Strengthen Alabama Homes Roof Grant Program
When the Strengthen Alabama Homes application period begins, you need to be ready. Funds from this program are given on a first-come, first-served basis so the quickest homeowners to complete the application get this incredible opportunity.
To give yourself the best chance at gaining the grant, follow these steps to complete your application. Then, start planning your new FORTIFIED roof!
Step 1: Mark Your Calendar for Opening Day
The Strengthen Alabama Homes application opens once per quarter, so be sure to mark your calendar for the next opening day.
The 2025 opening days are:
- Quarter 1: January 6th for Mobile County residents and January 8th for Baldwin County
- Quarter 2: April 1st for Mobile County and April 3rd for Baldwin County
- Quarter 3: July 7th for Mobile County and July 9th for Baldwin County
Step 2: Prepare Your Documents
To qualify for the new roof grant, you will need documentation proving that you have valid homeowners insurance including applicable wind and flood protection, your most recent tax return, and a notarized copy of the State of Alabama’s Vendor Disclosure Statement. You will have 14 days after applying to provide these documents, but we recommend gathering them in advance to streamline the process.
The Vendor Disclosure Statement is below. Keep in mind that it must be dated and notarized after the application opening date.
Step 3: Create An Account
On opening day, create an account on the Strengthen Alabama Homes website. You won’t be able to move forward with account creation until the grant application window opens at 9 am. You will also need to verify the email that you used to create the account, so be sure that you have access to that email account.
Step 4: Complete the Roof Grant Program Application
The next step is to complete the application. Just follow the prompts to provide information about yourself and your home.
Be prepared for delays during the application because many people will be attempting to apply at the same time. To speed the process along, only fill out the required fields in your initial application and use the 14-day period after you submit your application to upload documentation.
Here’s an example of how the application looked during last quarter’s application window.
Step 5: Re-apply for the Roof Grant If Needed
If space is full when you submit your application, we recommend trying again weekly throughout the quarter. Some applicants won’t meet the deadlines or will drop out of the program, leaving funds available within the quarter.
Step 6: Have Your Home Evaluated
If your initial application and documentatation are approved, you will receive a notification that it is time to move on to the next step of the process – choosing a FORTIFIED Evaluator. The person or company that you choose will be integral to the process, starting with an initial evaluation to determine if your home qualifies for the program.
The evaluation is pass / fail and it will be valid for 5 years unless your home is drastically changed during that period. If your home passes, the Evaluator will determine if a re-roof is needed to bring your home up to the FORTIFIED Roof or Silver designation.
Step 7: Get 3 Contractor Bids
Once your home passes evaluation, you’ll be prompted to choose 3 contractors from an approved list to bid on the needed work. As you consider your options, keep in mind our 5 Tips to Find the Best Roofer.
Contractor bids will be valid for 90 days after they are received. To get the most accurate bids, be sure to let the contactors know if you want to change the type of roofing material on your home – for example, switching from asphalt shingles to metal roofing.
Keep in mind that contractors can’t discuss specific aspects of their bid with you until all 3 bids are received. You can keep track of which bids have been submitted in the online portal.
Step 8: Roof Grant Application Approval – $10k!
After all 3 contactor bids are in, your full application will be reviewed. If approved, you’ll be told your grant amount and the contactor bids. At this point, you will also be notified of any out-of-pocket costs that you would be responsible for paying – such as amounts above the approved grant.
Step 9: Choose A Roofing Contractor
Once your application is approved, it’s time to choose a contractor from the three bids you received. You will only see the total bid amount from each contractor in the online portal, so we encourage you to reach out to the contractors to determine why their bids are different.
If you choose the lowest cost option without all the information, you could end up paying more later. For example, some roofers – like Complete Roofing – include enhanced warranties in their bid, while others offer these as an add-on later in the process.
If you have out-of-pocket expenses, also be sure to ask about financing options with your chosen contractors. For example, Complete Roofing offers a low-cost financing program for any expenses not covered by the grant.
